Evergreens in Wreaths

Funeral wreathes are often created with evergreen plants because they bring to mind the continuation of life even in the darkest days of winter.  When you give a funeral wreath composed of evergreens, you are conveying more than just sympathy and support—you are also indicating confidence that the bereaved will survive this loss and continue to grow in strength.   Here are a couple considerations when selecting an evergreen base for your funeral wreath:

Location
By choosing flora native to the most beloved area of the deceased, you are celebrating their unique taste.  By way of example, if it’s difficult to imagine your uncle John away from the Oregon coast, where he spent so many happy years, a wreath made of Port Orford Cedar would be an excellent base for a wreath celebrating his life.

Meaning
In addition to symbolizing continuance, each evergreen has its own special meaning.  Pine, holly, and yew indicate immortality, and convey that the deceased will continue to live in the minds and memories of family and friends.  Cedar represents strength and healing, and could serve to encourage survivors.
